surveillance video, a clear picture, the final picture of jennifer hawke-petit, less than an hour before her death. prosecutors say petit was at a local bank withdrawing $15,000 and calmly told the bank teller her ente family was being held hostage at home. she needed the money for ransom. at 9:21 a.m., with jennifer still in the bank, the manager made a chilling call to 911. >> we have a lady, who is in our bank right now, who says that her husband and children are being held at their house, that the police are told they will kill the children and the husband. she says they are being very nice, they have their faces covered. she is petrified. reporter: with two reason, these two men, steven hayes and joshua come come were terrorizing the family, beating dr. petit with a baseball bat and tying him to this pole in the basement. his two daughters were tied to their beds upstairs, all tortured overnight until the sun came up and the bank opened up. >> they're tied up, she said. she's taking $15,000 out of her credit line. they told her the wouldn't hurt anybody if she got back there with the mo

jennifer hawke-petit and her two daughters in 2007. a lawyer for the next suspect, joshua komisarjevsky held a news conference to correct what he called a misimpression of the petit family. he said the youngest daughter had not been raped but had been sexually assaulted. more on that later. you recall the video of jennifer hawke-petit withdrawing $15,000 before her murder. police testified hayes took her to the bank while the alleged accomplice held the family hostage. yesterday authorities released video from a gas station where one of the suspects allegedly purchased $10 worth of gas that would be used to burn down the petit's home. when she got back from withdrawing money, jennifer hawke-petit was sexually assaulted and strangled. her daughters were tied to beds and died in the fire that was then set. dr. william petit was injured but survived the attack. there's been testimony from police about cell phone text messages that the suspects allegedly sent to each other hours before the home invasion. 7:45 p.m., hayes texted, i'm champing at the bit to get started. need a margarita soon.
the intruders took jennifer to a bank and forced her to withdraw thousands from her account. a bank teller called police but by the time they arrived, the two children and mother were dead. house burned to the ground. they tried to escape but crashed into a barricade. william petit, who barely made it alive, suffered severe injuries. at a memorial service days later, he spoke about the tragedy. >> i guess if there's anything to be gained from the senseless deaths of my beautiful family, it's for us to all go forward. >> reporter: over the last three years he has launched a craw sad to have both men convicted and executed for their crimes. fighting proposed bills to ban the death penalty in connecticut. dr. petit, the survivor, made his plea very public and the governor reportedly decided not to sign the bill because of this case. >> reporter: this this morning, charged with capital murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, burglary and arson, 47-year-old steven hayes will finally face justice. both accused killers will be tried separately and dr. petit is expected to testify against both of them
. jennifer griffin live for us tonight at the pentagon. what -- do we know what iran is really trying to accomplish here? >> well, it could be a goodwill gesture to coincide with the muslim holiday eve. we have also seen in the past, shep, when iran feels pressure over nuclear program that it offers good gestures to take the heat off from the international community. in the last 24 hours south korea has put punishing sanctions on its main bank. >> shepard: you know, there is another big story, jen, concerning iran today. possible evidence that the country is working on another nuclear facility of some kind. this morning, an internal opposition group in iran called the iran policy committee held a news conference in washington. and during that conference, they announced the alleged existence of what it claims is a full enrichment site. satellite images like this one show the site. it appears to be some kind of industrial complex in iran. and according to this group, the facility is going up outside tehran and near the iranian city of qazvin. if it is a secret atomic site it, could be m

jennifer garyen reporting -- griffin reporting life at the pentagon. what do they have to say about this facility? >> reporter: well essentially, jenna, first of all, we have no independent way of confirming what they announced today, but this group in the past has revealed several sites inside of iran, major nuclear facilities that the iaea and white house eventually had to confirm the existence of, so they have proven reliable in the past. they have found a tunnel complex through satellite imagery as well as human intelligence inside the facility. it's about 80 miles west of tehran, it is a facility near the town of cause lean, they call it facility 311 for whatever that's worth. it, essentially, they're saying has 200-yard-long tunnels that are about 20 yards wide inside this mountain. there's been be digging going on for the past five years, and they're saying it looks like it's set up to have uranium-enrichment cascades. they think it's more along the scale of the cone facility that was revealed a year ago eventually confirmed by the white house, and they're saying this is anot

of dr. petit's family, his wife, jennifer and two daughters. >> the families are ready for this process to begin. and our hope is for justice to prevail. >> reporter: petit is supposed to describe for the first time, the home invasion. the sexual assaults. and the fire set to the home. and for the first time, we saw the surveillance image of mrs. petit at the bank. the bank teller that day was among the first to testify. telling the court that mrs. petit's hands were a little shaky. and that the wife said she had to withdraw $15,000 because her family was being held hostage. the bank teller said she alerted the bank manager, who also testified. telling the court that mrs. petit showed pictures of her daughters in her wallet. the court heard the 911 call from the bank manager who described the wife this way. she is petrified. then, dr. petit's neighbor took the stand. he heard someone calling his name. he opened his garage and saw a man lying in the driveway. i did not recognize him at first. his face was banged up. it just didn't look like dr. petit. he testified that inside the home, t

assault used on jennifer hawk petit, the mother in this case and her two daughters. the evidence that was talked about today backed up the prosecution's case that the mother of two had been sexually assaulted before she was manually strangled by stephen hayes, allegedly, and that 11-year-old makayla with the blond her had also been sexually violated before she died of smoke inhalation as she was tied up to her bed, violations against makayla allegedly came at the hands of the other in the case. forensic experts testified that there was no evidence of sexual assault on 17-year-old haley and that she managed to escape her ties. she was also tied up to her bed, and tried to flee the flames that engulfed her house. it was a fire that was set after they were all assaulted. but she collapsed and died at the top of the staircase in her home, and that's what we heard about today. mig you know, it's our job to report this to you in a matter of fact way and bring you the facts but it's tough to hear those facts and have any neutral reaction. i guess the fire marshals will appear today as w
